Kentucky Humanities Presents Michael Jones as Colonel Charles Young, Bridge Builder.
Colonel Young, son of slaves, was born in a log cabin near Mays Lick, a crossroads town in southern Mason County. His
father escaped enslavement by joining the Colored Artillery Volunteers during the Civil War. Charles Young graduated
with honors from high school. His exceptional score on West Point’s entrance exam earned him admittance to the Academy. He became the third African American to graduate from West
Point. He rose to Colonel in the U.S. Army. He also had a distinguished career with the National Park Service. In 1903, he became superintendent over Sequoia
and and General Grant National Parks. He served in the U.S. Army and with the National Parks Service for 37 years. He was the first African American Colonel in the U.S. Army. His last assignment in service for his nation was as military attaché to Liberia in 1919.
